This is an elaborately carved example of a transverse (side-blown) horn. An elegant war trumpet nicely stylized in an anthropomorphic / zoomorphic shape with a figurative head. The eyes are open and round wth prutruding brow, the nose is aquiline and patterns of parallel lines and spike motifs looking like scales below the eyes. The mouthpiece is in high relief, the body of the instrument is conical and slightly curved with skillfully engraved patterns. Nice dark brown patina. This instrument was used during ritual ceremonies related to head-hunting and war.
Pre-contact, stone -carved, 19th century.
